General:
What is the Certificate in
Leadership?
The University of Guelph’s Certificate in Leadership is a multidisciplinary,
five-course undergraduate program for degree students. The Certificate
program, made up of both face-to-face and distance education courses,
prepares you to thrive in today’s dynamic workplace by equipping
you with the right leadership knowledge, skills, and values.
Can I customize the program
to suit my area of interest?
Yes, there are two required courses, but you can tailor your program by
choosing from a number of different elective courses, as long as you meet
the course prerequisites.
I have already taken a few
of the Certificate courses. Can I apply these course credits towards the
Certificate in Leadership?
If you are in an undergraduate degree program at the University
of Guelph, you may count all of the Certificate courses towards both your
Undergraduate degree program and the Certificate in Leadership.
I can't take the required number
of courses in consecutive semesters. Is that a problem?
No, it is not.
Do I have to be a University
of Guelph degree student to enroll in the Certificate program?
No, our flexible Open Learning program lets you take a course for credit,
even if you are not enrolled in a University of Guelph degree program.

Leadership Practice:
I am currently involved on
campus. Can I apply this experience toward the 120-hour leadership practice
requirement?
Yes, you can, however, you must complete the Leadership
Practice Application form and demonstrate that this experience
provides new opportunities to develop or enhance particular skills, explore
your competency in a certain area, and/or test out new methods or approaches.
I am not currently involved
on campus but I was previously. Can I apply that experience toward the
120-hour requirement?
No, you cannot. The purpose of the required experience is to encourage
the exploration and development of a range of critical skills and competencies
within a leadership context. With this goal in mind, the Leadership
Practice Application form has been established to help you
- and your on-site supervisor - identify key skills and competencies that
you wish to develop, and to monitor your progress in these areas.
I have an executive position
with a student organization but I don't have a supervisor. I want to apply
this experience toward my 120-hour leadership practice requirement. Who
should I ask to supervise me?
Any staff or faculty member can serve in this capacity provided that they
agree to sign the Leadership
Practice Application form, meet with you regularly to discuss
your experience, and ensure that your leadership practice hours have been
fulfilled.

Online Distance Education
at University of Guelph:
What is online learning?
Online courses give you the same opportunity to learn as on-campus courses,
except that they are much more flexible. You don't have to be in a certain
place at a certain time in order to participate. When you sign up for
an online or "web-based" course, you'll receive the address
or "url" for your course's home page. Your course home page
is just like your classroom. From this starting point, you'll be guided
through each step of your course–learning activities, resources,
discussions with your teacher and coursemates, just to name a few. You'll
be taking your course with a group of other students (and we'll suggest
a weekly schedule for you to follow with your class), but you can choose
the time–day or night–to get online. And although our online
courses are "web-based", many come with other materials as well,
like course manuals, videotapes, CD's, or readers. You'll have some assignments
to submit, and you might have a final exam to write.
No lectures, no driving, no parking fees, no scheduling hassles. Just
a computer, a modem, and a willingness to set aside about 10 hours a week
for each course you'd like to take.
